Shuttle At Night

The Vehicle Assembly Building at 9 pm, just after I arrived at the Press Center to watch the launch.

As I drove in to the Space Center the illuminated Vehicle Assembly Building drew me as a magnet, growing ever larger in apparent size. This was my first sight of it at night, and I was torn between careful driving and eyeballing this spell-binding spectacle.

The STS 131 stack illuminated at 9:20 pm, nine hours before launch. Note the bird perched on one of the mooring pylons of the Turn Basin.

The shuttle was a magnificent sight, lit up by floodlights, which were reflected in the waters of the lagoon that abuts the KSC Press Site. It was only after I got back to Australia that I discovered that some of my photos included a bird standing atop a barge mooring pylon in the middle of the lagoon, with the search lights forming an X in the sky behind it.

The rest of the evening was spent preparing for the launch, booking and conducting interviews, and testing the rapid imaging system on my new camera.
