The Secret Eight

During the day the weather cleared and by evening the weather was calm and the sky starry.

And so it was that eight of us, plus two NASA photographer escorts, gathered at the appointed time at the rear of the NASA media building, underwent dog sniff, piled into a NASA van and headed off.

I thought that we were going to go to a vantage point beside the crawler way to see the STS 132 stack trundle past on its way to the pad. At first we took the road that supported this supposition.

To my utter astonishment we suddenly took a left turn off that road and headed towards the Vehicle Assembly Building. Through the gate of the security fence and right up to a side door. From a distance this door looks miniscule, but up close it proved to be large enough for several Northern Territory road trains to drive through - side by side!

But we didn't drive through. Instead, we parked about 10 metres from the building, the top of which was lost in the darkness above. We surrendered our mobile phones and left them in the van.
