My Lofty Aerie

My view across the NASA Television Studio, the deserted Press Center lawn and the Turn Basin to the Atlas 5 on the pad.

When, at 7 pm, we arrived at the Press Site we dispersed to several locations. I had earlier spied out a possie, high atop the NBC television studio, which in its turn sits atop the highest "hill" in the Kennedy Space Center. Even from the top of the building, we were barely able to see across the tree tops to the Atlas pad, some 3100 metres away.

Those in the know had told me that television never covers unmanned launches, and that I would be okay up there.

Surprise, then, that after ascending the external stairway I encountered a TV crew already there, setting up their camera and associated cables. They were from an Orlando television channel. I "bagsed" a spot, only to find, a few minutes later, and to my dismay, another TV crew arriving. They were from NBC, who owned the building. They generously said I could stay, as long as I stayed out of their line of sight to the Atlas launch pad.

Now that I was set up, I had time to look around. The neighbouring CBS building was accumulating a jovial crowd on its roof top. Most did not seem to be media, and certainly the CBS building itself was deserted. Anyone on that building would have to look past us folks on the NBC building to see the launch.
