As the countdown proceeded to zero the grey of the Earth's shadow rose in the eastern sky. Against this grey the flashing lights of the four lightning conductors made a contrasting red.
When the count, which I could vaguely hear relayed over the press site's tannoy system, neared its 7:50 pm end I began recording a commentary that I would continue until after the rocket had disappeared from sight.
