Not Everyone Has NASA TV

The STS 131 mission patch and NASA "meatball" logo adorn the Press Center's confernece room.

The show now over, we packed up our gear, boarded the NASA buses and headed back to the News Center, where we were able to watch the post landing activities on NASA's high definition TV monitors. Later, there were replays of the landing. What a change to see these in high definition rather than the low resolution low frame rate streaming video on my dial-up Internet connection at home.

I chatted with one NASA employee who told me seeing it in quality TV was also a novelty for him - at home, like most Americans, he could only watch it on a dial-up internet connection.

Mike Moses in full cry.
Pete Nickolenko listens to a reporter's question.

Half an hour before noon there was the half hour post landing news conference in the auditorium, and another opportunity to make Southern FM's presence known.

In attendance were Mike Moses, the Space Shuttle Launch Integration Manager, Kuniaki Shiraki, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Executive Director, and Pete Nickolenko, the STS 131 Launch Director. Unfortunately, I asked a rather technical question about the re-entry dynamics that none of the panellists were qualified to answer.

Back at the News Center I was glad of my habit of taking my own sandwiches, fruit and water everywhere. Others in our party were getting pretty hungry and our day was not yet over.
