Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Still wet from Sunday night's drenching.

In contrast to the previous day, Tuesday, April 27, was a glorious one. As the sun rose I drove north through Titusville, across the Indian River and into the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. At 7:40 am I went for the first of several walks in the bush. After some experimentation I found that if one kept walking the legions of mosquitos would largely leave me alone. This necessity was to the detriment of my desire to take photographs of the beams of sunshine slanting across the ponds.

On one walk I discovered the railway line that runs parallel to Beach Road and then goes into the Kennedy Space Center. The road into the Press Site crosses this line near the Vehicle Assembly Building, and is even equipped with the usual railway crossing signals. In nearly a month there I had never seen any evidence that the railway line was used, although the rails were not in the least rusted. As luck would have it, a train rumbled past just after I had re-entered the forest, so I had to be content just listening to it.
