On Sunday I drove to Port Canaveral and Manatee Park on the eastern shores of the Banana River. I had seen manatees swimming in the Indian River outside my motel room, but this group of about eight mammals were more active and obviously enjoying the outfall flow from a sewage treatment plant in the same way we humans enjoy hydro jet spa baths. Manatees normally swim below the water, surfacing every five minutes or so to breathe. These ones were frolicking in the shallow water and very easy to see.
